The way your employees exercise impacts your business

We know that happiness leads to success and that exercise in general, no matter what it is, makes us happier beings. 1 However, not all exercise is created equal. Supporting your people to be physically active with the right kind of activity can positively affect the performance of your business. Let us explain why.

In one of our previous pieces 2, we talked about how 80% of your people aren’t getting enough daily physical activity and how it’s affecting your business. We made you aware that physical inactivity decreased productivity with a 29% increase in errors and an 8% decrease in processing speed. Now it’s time to show you exactly what exercise best benefits not just your employees, but your company.

The Science.

It has long been understood that there is a direct link between brain activity and blood flow.

While the brain comprises only 2% of our body, it consumes an enormous 1/5 of the body’s oxygen.

Physical activity is critical to getting enough oxygen to the brain. More importantly, though, it is the RIGHT kind of physical activity that is the key to unlocking the long-lasting benefits of the increased oxygen for both body and cognitive function.

To get technical, an expansion of blood oxygen increases an index of 5-HT synthesis in the human brain as measured using alpha-[(11)C]methyl-L-tryptophan and positron emission tomography. 3

When we perform cognitive-based tasks, various physiological changes occur that increase the supply of glucose and oxygen to our nervous system and the supply of highly concentrated oxygen positively affects cognitive processes.

So an increase in oxygen = positive cognitive processes!

The exercises.

When we tend to think of endorphin and blood pumping exercises our mind tends to gravitate towards cardiovascular exercises like running or swimming instead of weight based alternatives.

All exercise has certain benefits, so no matter what you’re doing, you’re stilling helping your mind and body in one way or another.

When it comes to cardiovascular exercise the main benefits4 are;

  • Aiding in lowering blood pressure.
  • Helping to regulate your blood sugar.
  • Oxygen intake.
  • Accesible to everyone.
  • Strengthens immune system.

Though from the outset these are all wonderful benefits that enhance your body, when compared to resistance or interval based training, the cognitive impact seems to last only whilst participating.

The secret weapon to success for your employees and business is resistance training. Let us tell you why.

As a leader, you want your employees to be at their most productive, whilst still being able to stay socially connected with their peers.

We spoke about how oxygen intake increases; energy, happiness and brain activity and how exercise increases said oxygen intake, but there’s a certain exercise that’s the best at doing it.

In a study done by Sacred Heart University 5, a comparison was done between people who took part in cardiovascular exercises and those who endured resistance training. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of both exercise mode and intensity on excess postexercise oxygen consumption.

When it came to the benefits of oxygen intake to the brain when comparing between the two, on average it took walking, running and cycling 10x longer to produce the oxygen benefit than with resistance exercise. After four weeks of the study, resistance exercise participants experienced greater positive wellbeing and personal accomplishment vs their competitors. As a result, this meant less psychological distress, perceived stress, and emotional exhaustion whilst in the workplace.

Furthermore, a similar study done by McMaster University 6 shows that 11 minutes of resistance training creates a sustained increase in oxygen that lasts long after the session when compared to that of cardiovascular exercise.

Note: The differentiation of immediate benefits from Resistance Training vs Interval Training and Walking.

When your employees have a physically active lifestyle it has a positive effect on their brain health. Their ability to make decisions, connect with peers, focus their minds on tasks at hand, manage their stress, improve their overall performance and be at their most productive are all driven by their brain oxygen levels and physical health.

The 11 minutes of resistance based strength training that we discussed above, will create an instant oxygen boost that can last up to 21 hours, making your employees be the best they can be throughout their day.

What now?

We know as a leader that you want the best for your company, and in turn, want the best for your employees, so it’s time to make the best move to benefit you both.

Simply put, you need to add resistance training into your team's daily routine.

We know you’ve probably already invested in a corporate wellness program in the hopes that it will create an increase in camaraderie and productivity throughout your team, and we applaud you for doing so. However, without resistance training added into your and your employees day to day lives, you just won’t be getting the benefits that your company deserves.

Your people are your competitive advantage and their performance dictates your success. So, now that you know that the benefits of resistance training outweigh your current initiatives, it’s time for you to find the right solution for you.
