The importance of 'social connectedness' and health in the workplace

With the current covid environment and how it’s impacted our workspaces, now more than ever, social connection is needed. Most companies nowadays have staff partially working from the office or at home and not consistently in one place, which makes it harder to keep up that connection with your employees.

When researchers refer to the concept of ‘Social Connectedness’, they mean the feeling that you belong to a group and generally feel close to other people. Scientific evidence strongly suggests that this is a core psychological need, essential to feeling satisfied with your life. Whether that’s at home, at school or work.

The exact way in which social connectedness influences well being depends on additional factors such as the social norms in a person’s network, the strength of a person’s social identity, and a person’s personality type.

The importance of social connectedness in supporting public mental health is well established. Proven links include; lower rates of anxiety and depression, higher self-esteem, greater empathy, and more trusting and cooperative relationships.

According to MI Blues Perspective in their report on social connections, ‘If you want more productive and engaged employees, it might be worth thinking about ways to foster a more socially connected environment.’ They go on to state that if an employee has a ‘work best friend’ then they are;

  • Are seven times more likely to be engaged in their work
  • Better engage with customers
  • Are less likely to get injured on the job
  • Have increased productivity
  • Have a stronger bond with the company they work for
  • Receive more praise
  • Tend to be more committed to quality work

As a result of this, along with many other studies that have been conducted, we here at June365 have found that putting social connectedness and wellbeing together, can achieve a greater outcome.

Our wellness program creates the ability to exercise amongst colleagues in the workplace, as well as creating a sense of self-pride when it comes to progress and results. Through our recent blogs, you will have read that a wellness program greatly increases productivity and efficiency in the workplace, which seems to be the same outcome as social connectedness.

Thus, by implementing June365 into your organisation, you can bring social connectedness back to your organisation, wherever your workspace may be.
